Can you get the Free $1,200 Ceiling Insulation?
Note: these guidelines have been researched from the Australian Government website on the ceiling insulation rebate. It would be a good idea to read their official guidelines from their official document, as well as the material below.
You must be one of these 3 types of people:
- the Owner-Occupier or Beneficial Owner of the dwelling where the Ceiling Insulation is to be installed and be an individual who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident aged 18 or over
- the Landlord of the dwelling where the Ceiling Insulation is to be installed, and also be an Australian citizen or permanent resident aged 18 years or over, or a corporate entity incorporated in Australia
- the Tenant of a dwelling owned by a Landlord an yo hav evidence of the Landlord’s permission (such as a letter from the Landlord or Landlord’s agent) to install Ceiling Insulation in that dwelling under the Home Insulation Program and to sign the Work Order Form including giving a release on the Landlord’s behalf;
Once you have figured out whether you are the right kind of person, then you have to:
- Get at least two (2) genuinely independent quotes from two businesses on the Installer Provider register. We can help you by arranging at least 2 registered installers to contact you - just fill out the form on the right.
- Obtain the approval of the owners’ corporation, if applicable.
- Fill out the official Work Order Form properly.
If you already have insulation in your roof...
You have to be organising NEW ceiling insulation, not fixing old ceiling insultation if the old stuff is still OK to be used.
If your old ceiling insulation really is so crap that it is useless (they call it "Negligible Effectiveness"), then you might be able to still get the rebate.
If any of these things below apply to you, you CAN'T get it
- If you got the Australian Government’s Solar Hot Water Rebate since the rebate was increased to $1,600 on 3 February 2009 for that dwelling. The Solar Hot Water Rebate and the Ceiling Insulation Rebate are incompatible - it means the government will only give you one or the other.
- If you applied for the Homeowner Insulation Program or the Low Emission Assistance Plan for Renters in relation to the dwelling (a dwelling can only be insulated once under the Program including the Homeowner Insulation Program and the Low Emission Assistance Plan for Renters)
- If you have already received over $1,200 worth of ceiling insulation rebate for any home of yours, you can't get it again.
- the dwelling where the ceiling insulation is to be installed is a new home, a rebuilt home or an extension to an existing home built from 2003 onwards and is covered by the mandatory thermal performance requirements for new housing under the Building Code of Australia
- the dwelling where the ceiling insulation is installed is owned by the Commonwealth or a Commonwealth authority, a State, Territory or Local Government or State, Territory or Local Government Authority including a State, Territory or Local Government Housing Authority
- you didn't fill out the Work Order Form correctly
- the ceiling insulation replaces existing ceiling insulation with a rating above what is deemed as having negligible effectiveness.
If you did any of those things, you cannot get the ceiling insulation rebate.
IMPORTANT!!
The $1,200 rebate will not be provided where:
- the insulation has been installed by an installer who is not on the Australian Government’s Installer Provider Register
- the householder has not obtained two genuinely independent written quotes provided following physical site inspections.
